2020 NFL Draft: 5 Prospects New York Giants could target with No. 4 pick
By Evan Bachman
The New York Giants aren’t as weak at linebacker as they are at cornerback, but David Mayo is a free agent and Alec Ogletree is a borderline starting level player, so it’s still a need. Drafting Simmons wouldn’t just fill a need, but it’d be a good value pick. The way I view it, if Okudah’s gone, Simmons is the top defensive player available at this point and some may view him as the best player available.
Simmons was ACC defensive player of the year and the Dick Butkus Award winner this season. He’s recorded 97 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, seven sacks, six passes defended and three interceptions. These numbers show how Simmons can affect the game in so many different ways.
Simmons is a prototypical linebacker in today’s NFL. He has excellent size (6-foot-4, 230 pounds) and athleticism. He is a converted safety and that is a big reason why he is so good in coverage, which is the most important aspect of linebackers in the modern NFL. He is also very good at both stopping the run and rushing the passer. Simmons is very NFL ready, he could step in and be one of the best or the very best player on this defense.
