Carolina Panthers: Top five first-round 2020 NFL draft targets
Jedrick Wills, OT, Alabama
Offensive tackle may not seem like a massive need for the Carolina Panthers right now. Rookies Greg Little and Dennis Daley each found success at times this season. However, veteran Daryl Williams will enter free agency this offseason and starting right tackle Taylor Moton only has one year left on his rookie deal.
If the Carolina Panthers are going to bring Moton back, they will likely be forced to pay a heavy price. He is a good player who deserves to be paid like a top-tier offensive tackle, but I could see the Panthers going in another direction. Instead of giving Moton big money, they could look to draft his replacement and trade Moton before he gets too expensive. If they decide to go this route, Alabama offensive tackle Jedrick Wills feels like a great fit.
Wills is a mean and nasty right tackle who fires off of the ball quickly and shows tremendous raw power. He is a fiery competitor who is always looking to manhandle and flat-out embarrass the opposing defender. Wills is a pure power blocker who is particularly impressive in the run game. He shows great pad level and extremely strong hands. Once, Wills is able to get ahold of a defender, it is typically game over.
While he is not a great athlete at the position, Wills does have enough athleticism to hold his own in all situations. He shows great balance and moves his feet well enough to handle most speed around the corner. His anchor in pass protection is particularly impressive. You simply cannot win with a straight bull rush against this guy.
Assuming the Panthers want to build their offense around running back Christian McCaffrey going forward, Wills feels like a strong fit for this team. He may not be their first choice out of the guys on this list, but Wills should be high on their board.
