Grant Delpit, S, LSU

LSU safety Grant Delpit is the most obvious target for the Dallas Cowboys in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Safety continues to stand out as a major position of need for this team, as they simply cannot continue to count on Jeff Heath. Xavier Woods holds down one safety position for Dallas, but he needs a legitimate running mate. If he is available when the Cowboys go on the clock, Delpit would be an ideal fit.

Delpit is an incredibly talented safety prospect who shows fantastic playmaking ability on the back-end. He is a smooth athlete who ranges around the defense with ease. Delpit covers a ton of ground in deep zone coverage and shows fantastic natural ball skills. He is also a strong short zone coverage defender and has the combination of size, speed and athleticism to hold his own against any tight end or running back in man coverage.

Whether you need him on the back-end or near the line of scrimmage, Delpit can take care of any coverage responsibility. Now, he did struggle with tackling in space this past season at LSU, which can be a concern at the next level. Delpit needs to learn how to break down and consistently make takes if he is ever going to reach his full upside at the next level.

Delpit is not a perfect player, but he is a uniquely talented and versatile athlete who can make an impact at all levels of the defense. Pairing Delpit with Woods would give the Cowboys a duo of safeties who could legitimately shine both near the line of scrimmage and on the back-end.
