Ranking the 10 best NFL Draft picks of the decade (2010-2019)
3. 2017 NFL Draft: Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs, Round 1, Pick 10
In 2017, the Kansas City Chiefs decided to take a gamble on drafting a new QB of the future when they traded up to take Patrick Mahomes out of Texas Tech with the 10th overall pick of the NFL Draft. My goodness has that gamble paid off, as Mahomes has rapidly become arguably the best quarterback in the NFL today.
After not getting much playing time as a rookie, Mahomes took the reins of the Chiefs offense in his second year and quickly introduced himself as one of the most exciting young quarterbacks we have ever seen.
In his debut season as the starter, Mahomes threw for over 5,000 yards, 50 touchdowns (joins Peyton Manning and Tom Brady as only QB’s to ever throw 50) and nearly led the Chiefs to the Super Bowl, taking Tom Brady to overtime in the AFC championship game. This led to him being the youngest quarterback to ever win league MVP.
He has followed up that legendary campaign with another gem in 2019, throwing for nearly 4,000 yards, 25 touchdowns and just 4 interceptions in 13 games. These numbers come after Mahomes dislocated his kneecap in a Week 7 contest against the Denver Broncos, causing him to miss two weeks.
What Patrick Mahomes has done in such a short time in the NFL can only point to what he is going to become down the line. He has the makings of an all-time great and has not even reached his prime yet.
