Tight End. Missouri. player. 123. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Albert Okwuegbunam. 144

So Jason Witten left the Monday Night Football crew for nothing? Thanks, Dallas Cowboys, for tricking this budding sports anchor into thinking there was a chance THIS would be the year that Jason Garrett and the Joneses had finally put it all together for a Super Bowl run. After all the years Witten has given to this franchise? How do you sleep at night?

So Witten may be ready this time to retire. Which at the age of 37, Witten should have more than earned his Dallas Cowboys pension; a guaranteed sports media personality job and local sponsorship deals in the greater Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Want to find the next big body tight end who can block and is a presence down the field? Try out Albert Okwuegbunam from Missouri.

For starters, he is 6-foot-5 255 pounds. This guy is scary on the field. Tackling him is going to be a problem for corners and safeties. Albert can haul in the catches too, his big hands serving him more as a butterfly net for the football.

He can shake off defenders; they can try and climb up his back and attempt to block the ball. It doesn’t work. If the ball is in his hand, you are going to need a big linebacker or two cornerbacks who aren’t too particular about using their bodies as flying projectiles to take Albert down.

Albert is also pretty reliable. He had zero fumbles in three seasons of play. He was a solid contributor to the team, earning 23 touchdowns during his time in Missouri, 11 of which came his rookie year. His average yards per reception was 11.8 this season according to ESPN. So he isn’t just a check-down guy.

Why is he all the way in the fifth round you ask? For starters, he is not fast. Albert will need to earn his meal ticket by being an extra pass-blocker and being a safety valve on check downs. He can haul in passes from the flat, but cornerbacks will catch up to him before he gets too far. His route running isn’t particularly elusive or convincing for defenders either.

Albert is definitely a work in progress tight end. He will need to clean up his route running and slim down to be a useful downfield target in the NFL. But if a team can train this guy and get him to clean up his mechanics, you are looking at someone who could be more than just another tight end. You are looking at a tight end only an inch shorter than Rob Gronkowski.

And they say there isn’t a lot of talent in the later rounds of the NFL Draft.
