2020 NFL Draft: Chargers snag new QB in first-round mock draft
At this point in the year, barring any surprises, LSU’s Joe Burrow should be the first pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Burrow is the top quarterback in the draft, who has put together an otherworldly season at the position that earned him the Heisman Trophy. On film, Burrow shows poise and accuracy, something the Cincinnati Bengals could use in their corner as Andy Dalton continues to regress. Burrow could come in day one and give the Bengals a spark.
This another selection that I don’t believe will change anytime soon. The Washington Redskins need help at many different positions, including offensive tackle, corner and edge rusher. Despite selecting Montez Sweat last year in the first round, veteran pass rusher Ryan Kerrigan could be a cap casualty after a down year. Chase Young is a special talent who shouldn’t drop out of the top three picks of the 2020 NFL Draft. A perfect scenario for the Washington Redskins with this pick.
The Detroit Lions do not need a quarterback, their offensive tackles are solid and while they could use defensive line help, this spot is too early to address that position. So what do you do if you’re Bob Quinn? You select the best corner in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Darius “Big Play” Slay is getting older and the Lions do not have another viable outside corner. Justin Coleman was a great signing by Detroit but he’s relegated to the slot. Okudah is a quick-footed lockdown corner who adds an extra kick to Matt Patricia’s defense.
While I mulled over giving the New York Giants a wide receiver with this pick, they can address that need somewhere else in the draft. Daniel Jones has shown flashes of what he can do as a passer, but in order for him to continue to grow, you need to protect him.
Nate Solder isn’t cutting it at left tackle and his contract isn’t ideal, and Mike Remmers has struggled at right tackle. Should the Giants take Andrew Thomas here in the 2020 NFL Draft, they would be getting a mauler in the run game and heavy-handed pass blocker that would help keep Jones clean.
Josh Rosen nor Ryan Fitzpatrick are the answer(s) at quarterback for the Miami Dolphins. While the structure around them isn’t great right now, the Dolphins need to address the position early in the 2020 NFL Draft. Sure there’s a risk when taking Oregon’s Justin Herbert as his decision making and some of his accuracy issues give me pause. But his ball placement and athletic traits are intriguing enough to warrant a selection here.
Since the surprising departure of Telvin Smith before the start of the 2019 NFL season, the Jacksonville Jaguars need linebacker help. While Myles Jack is certainly talented, he cannot do everything by himself. Isaiah Simmons is the best linebacker in the 2020 NFL Draft, whose background as a safety provides him with excellent range and instincts. If Smith does come back next season, a linebacker trio of him, Simmons and Jack would be a formidable force.
With Phillip Rivers showing clear signs of regression, its high time the Los Angeles Chargers address the quarterback position. With Rivers’ contract expiring as well, GM Tom Telesco needs to select a replacement within the first two rounds of the 2020 NFL Draft. Tua Tagovailoa, despite massive injury concerns, is a talented prospect who can start day one for Los Angeles. Tua would bring poise and touch to an offense in dire need of it right now, barring any medical setbacks.
While the Carolina Panthers could certainly go a number of different ways with this pick, particularly quarterback if they opt to trade Cam Newton. However, for right now I have them selecting offensive tackle Jedrick Wills to replace free agent Daryl Williams.
Wills is a riser on many boards in recent weeks due to his overall dominance on the football field. He shows ability on film to maul people in the run game while also proving to be a technically sound pass protector. Although the Panthers may end going a different way with the first pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, drafting Wills is something they should heavily consider.
