A complete 2020 NFL Draft scouting report of Utah running back Zack Moss.

Zack Moss is arguably the best senior running back prospect in the 2020 NFL draft class and could end up becoming an immediate playmaker at the next level. Considering his expected draft range, Moss could quickly become a major steal in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The 2020 NFL Draft is filled with talent at the running back position. Guys like Travis Etienne, D’Andre Swift, Jonathan Taylor and J.K. Dobbins lead the way at the position, but this will end up being an extremely deep and well-rounded group. Today, we are going to dig deep into Moss’ game and try to determine his value at the next level.

Height: 5-foot-10
Weight: 222 pounds
2019 stats: 219 carries for 1,359 yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground. 26 receptions for 374 yards and two touchdowns as a receiver.

Note: Height and weight are according to the University of Utah athletics.

Moss is a patient runner who shows impressive natural ball carrier vision, especially on inside zone runs. He does a great job of waiting for his offensive line to do their job and has the quickness to hit the hole in time when it opens up. He is a smart runner who is always going to find the best path to attack.

Moss is also extremely quick in short spaces, cutting through traffic well in the middle of the field and even showing solid elusiveness in the open field. However, it is Moss’ power that stands out as his best trait.

This guy is an absolute load to bring down, lowering his shoulder and embracing contact at all times. He can bowl over defenders with raw power at the point of attack, but it is Moss’ balance through and after contact that really stands how. He may have the best contact balance of any running back in the 2020 NFL draft class, giving him a safe floor at the next level.

While Moss does have a fair bit of quickness, his raw speed does leave plenty to be desired. His burst through the hole is average at best and he will never be much of a big-play threat.

Moss is a strong pass protector who squares up to his defender well and is completely willing to do what he needs to keep his quarterback clean. He will be an advanced pass blocker for a rookie running back, which will likely help him gain the early trust of his head coach. Moss does show solid hands and can create after the catch a bit, but receiving is unlikely to be a big part of his game.

Overall, Moss is a smart and instinctive back who shows good quickness and great power at the point of attack. He should be a consistent chain mover at the next level who should be particularly appealing to teams who run a zone rushing scheme. Also, his pass protection ability gives him a chance to be a true three-down back at the next level.
