New York Jets 7-round mock draft: Helping Sam Darnold
The New York Jets get a big target for Sam Darnold in the 6th round in Notre Dame wideout Chase Claypool. The Jets lack a receiver that can go up and grab contested balls in the red zone and Claypool can be just that for Darnold. In his final year at Notre Dame, Claypool hauled in 59 catches for 891 yards, 12 of those catches being for touchdowns. The Jets do have tight ends Chris Herndon and Ryan Griffin as red-zone threats, but both will be coming off injuries in 2020.
This season the Jets went out and traded for Demaryius Thomas from New England and could come back next season, but he doesn’t have much left in the tank and hasn’t been that productive for the Jets. Claypool figures to take his place as that big target for Sam Darnold.
With their last pick in the draft, the New York Jets grab another receiver for Darnold that can go up and get the football. At 6-foot-4 Victor possess the size that is of value to be an excellent red-zone target. Victor had 6 touchdowns this season with only 31 receptions for 507 yards which is unheard of. That’s the kind of potential that teams should be looking at as he has proven that he can be productive despite the lack of receptions.
I have clearly emphasized the offensive skills position in this draft for the Jets and I believe GM Joe Douglas should do the same. Binjimen Victor could add to the depth at wide receiver for the Jets which could take a hit if they cannot bring back Robby Anderson who’s set to be an unrestricted free agent.
