Louisville offensive lineman Mekhi Becton has officially declared for the 2020 NFL Draft.

The 2020 NFL Draft declarations keep on pouring in. The latest of those declarations comes from Louisville offensive lineman Mekhi Becton.

Becton started in 12 games as a sophomore in 2018 and started in 11 games as a junior in 2019, where Louisville enjoyed a resurgence, finishing 7-5.

At 6-foot-7 and around 369 pounds, Becton has plenty of size for an offensive lineman, and may even need to shed a little weight for the NFL. If he can do that, teams will jump at the chance to find a spot for him.

Becton played tackle in his time at Louisville and did end playing both left and right tackle. Teams may opt to see how he fares at the guard spot as well, and combine testing may be a determining factor for him in the 2020 NFL Draft process. The versatility he provides will likely be something that could drive him up boards come April.

When looking at Becton’s tape, there’s plenty to like. His footwork has consistently gotten better, and when he gets a good jump off the snap, it is difficult for edge rushers to get around him with his massive frame.

When it comes to Becton’s hand usage, there’s also plenty to hang your hat on. When everything is on time (regarding his jump out of his stance), he lands a good initial punch on defenders and his upper body strength keeps them off balance. He actually put together a solid game against Alabama back in 2018 at right tackle.

There are some consistency issues with Becton. Despite his good footwork, he does struggle at times to recover when he’s beat initially, and can also get beat when he mistimes his punch. Both of these are prevalent on tape. Teams will want to see him develop more consistency to be an NFL starter.
