2020 NFL Draft: Five teams who should target Oklahoma QB Jalen Hurts
By Ian Higgins
Chicago Bears
With a paper-competitive roster being held back by lacking offensive production and poor quarterback from bust-bound top selection Mitchell Trubisky, Chicago will be looking to start their journey in a new direction with a talent such as Jalen Hurts. Trubisky will be entering the final year of his rookie contract (less a 5th-year team option), and can still contribute as the starter in Chicago while fighting for his job against the rookie.
Chicago’s offense currently has a running backs group of the undersized dynamo Tarik Cohen and unproven rookie David Montgomery. Similarly to the Chargers, each back will offer a unique benefit, one being the rusher (Montgomery) and one being the easy checkdown (Cohen). Motion and option play with Hurts, Cohen, and Montgomery should give NFC North rivals nightmares. Chicago’s receiving corps is nothing to amaze, but options such as Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel, and recent performers Anthony Miller and J.P. Holtz are more than enough for the playmaker under center.
Chicago’s formerly feared defense led by Khalil Mack has taken a step back this season, at least in part due to the offensive struggles leaving the unit in losing situations. The offseason loss of safety Adrian Amos has shown some side-effects, but this is a unit who should be leading their team. Complemented by ground & pound, ball-control offense, this defense could return to their former glory.
Chicago can not miss with two drafted quarterbacks in a row, and Hurts is their second chance to right their wrongs. Trubisky will have his chance to fight for his job, but Hurts will be waiting for his opportunity to jump on the starting job once Trubisky begins to slip. A new offensive gameplan will need to be made around Hurts, focusing on short, rhythmic completions and a dynamic running game.
