Miami wide receiver Jeff Thomas declares for 2020 NFL Draft
Miami wide receiver Jeff Thomas will enter the 2020 NFL draft class.
The 2020 NFL Draft is going to be loaded with talent and depth at the wide receiver position, which does not necessarily bode well for a guy like Jeff Thomas. There is a lot to like about Thomas’ game, but if we are being honest here, his 2020 NFL draft stock is limited.
Thomas had consistent off-field issues in college, resulting in him getting kicked off of the team last year. He was able to return to Miami after a coaching change, but Thomas was also hit with a two-game suspension this season. While we do not specifically know what is going on in these situations, NFL teams are undoubtedly going to have their concerns. Even with that being the case, Thomas has announced his intention to enter the 2020 NFL Draft.
Of all of the players who have declared for the 2020 NFL Draft early, Thomas is the one who appears most likely to fall far down the board. Thomas not only has potentially significant character concerns, but his on-field production in college was also limited.
His best season came as a sophomore in 2018 when Thomas caught 35 passes for 563 yards and three touchdowns. However, his production took a step back this season (31/379/3) and his career numbers are rather unimpressive (83/1,316/8).
As exciting as Thomas can be to watch at times, his overall production was consistently limited. It is difficult to project him as a big-time playmaker going forward when he disappeared so many times in college.
That being said, Thomas has the skill-set that makes him an exciting prospect to dream on. He has impressive speed and quickness at the position and is naturally elusive in the open field. Thomas can make defenders miss in open space and has the speed the take it to the house from anywhere on the field. The modern NFL is built on speed and quickness and Thomas has plenty to make an impact.
If nothing else, he could come in and be an interesting return specialist/gadget offensive player for an NFL team. That being said, those kinds of players do not typically go high in the NFL Draft.
There are reasons to be excited about Thomas, but the character concerns coupled with his potentially limited role at the next level make him a risky selection. More likely than not, Thomas will be more than a day three flyer by some team in the 2020 NFL Draft.
