Jordan Love enters 2020 NFL Draft: Where does he fit in QB class?
Jordan Love has officially entered the 2020 NFL draft class. Is he going to be a first-round selection?
On Tuesday, Utah State quarterback Jordan Love announced his intention to enter the 2020 NFL draft class. He made the announcement on Twitter, where he also let it be known that he will still play in Utah State’s bowl game against Kent State later this month.
Love is one of the most interesting players in the 2020 NFL draft class. His combination of size, arm talent and mobility is nearly unrivaled in the class and will obviously appeal to NFL teams. Based on his upside, quarterback-needy teams will at least have Love on their radar as a first-round selection. That being said, his performance on the field has left plenty to be desired this season.
In 12 games this season, Love has completed 60.6% of his passes for 3,085 yards, 17 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. Those kinds of numbers do not exactly scream first-round pick. That being said, his 2018 numbers (64%/3,567/32/6) paint a much more positive picture. Love was inconsistent and erratic this season, but his skills stand out and we saw him dominate just one year ago.
Actual accuracy and ball placement is not really a major concern for Love. His accuracy is a bit inconsistent, but he has shown the ability to fit the ball into tight spaces many times. Love can also hit his receiver deep down the field in stride and does a great job of working the sideline.
However, his overall decision-making undoubtedly needs some work. Love tends to trust his arm too much, opting for a more difficult throw down the field even if it is not necessary. It is great that he can hit the deep ball, but if Love is going to be successful at the next level, he needs to learn to take what the defense is giving him at times.
When it comes to the 2020 NFL Draft, it is easy to see why teams could fall for Love. His arm is great, he can place the ball on a dime and he moves extremely well in and outside of the pocket. Love also shows an impressive ability to throw on the run.
In the end, I expect Love to be taken in the later stages of the first round, probably by a competitive team with a veteran quarterback. The New England Patriots and New Orleans Saints stand out as great fits, but so do the Indianapolis Colts if they are not fully committed to Jacoby Brissett as their long-term starter.
