Pittsburgh Steelers seven-round 2020 NFL mock draft
By John Newman
With their final pick in the 2020 NFL draft, The Pittsburgh Steelers will need to find some depth pieces for the interior of the defensive line. With Defensive Tackle Javon Hargrave becoming a free agent after 2019, the team will need to find some help to plug-in and hopefully develop for future seasons.
With Raequan Williams, they will have a player who can grow with the organization and hopefully one day become a full-time starter. His stats with the Michigan State Spartans are not particularly outstanding. With five sacks this season, Williams is tied for the 105th spot in college football sack rankings according to ESPN.
What makes me think Williams has what it takes to make it in the NFL is his raw talents. The Michigan State senior has great form and the body to be a decisive tackle. Playing in the cold weather of Michigan will translate well to Pittsburgh, where the frost comes early and the ground becomes hard as a rock by the end of October.
Williams needs work on his pass rush and would need to develop before he could become a full-time starter. But with only five picks in this year’s draft, selecting Williams isn’t so much about finding an impact player for 2020. It is about finding talent at the end of the draft that a team can develop and replacing a more talented player lost in free agency.
Williams has all the tools to become a decent defensive tackle in the NFL. He has played every year since his freshman season 4 seasons ago. While his production isn’t what a team wants to see every year, Williams has four solid seasons of preparing for game day. That means four years of exercising, watching tape, dressing and preparing for game day.
Even if Williams isn’t the answer to Hargrave leaving in free agency, Williams could be a valuable player for a very talented Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense.
