2020 NFL mock draft: Burrow or Young at No. 1? How far does Tua fall?
By Evan Bachman
If the Bengals end up with the draft’s top selection the Cincinnati fanbase will likely be split on whether to take the draft’s best quarterback, LSU’s Joe Burrow or the draft’s best player, Ohio State’s Chase Young.
One idea is for the Bengals to take Young this year, then wait for next year to get their quarterback in a very promising class with Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields and Brock Purdy. Ultimately, I believe that as amazing as Chase Young is, the need to find a franchise quarterback will be too much. Andy Dalton, 32, has one year left on his current contract and perhaps could have some value on the trade market, but he certainly isn’t the answer long-term.
Burrow could become the third straight quarterback to go from someone who wasn’t getting talked about as a legitimate prospect before the season to the first overall pick. This season, he’s completed 78.3% of his passes, thrown for 4366 yards, and has 47 touchdowns (including three rushing) with just six picks.
According to PFF, “On all throws targeted at least 10 yards downfield, Burrow finished the season 101-of-152 for 2,475 yards, 31 touchdowns against just six interceptions and 29 big-time throws, fielding a ridiculous 69.1% adjusted completion percentage in the process to lead the nation.”
Those types of numbers while pushing the ball down the field are very impressive and are a big reason I believe the Bengals will jump at the chance to get their franchise quarterback now, instead of wait for next year.
