Pick Analysis. Alabama. 61. player. Scouting Report. Devonta Smith. 59. Wide Receiver

Another member of the Tide! Now that the Miami Dolphins have surrounded Tua Tagovailoa with two familiar faces at tackle and gave him a solid option in the backfield, it’s time to give him a go-to wide receiver. Who has that been for Tua most of the time this season? Devonta Smith.

While Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs III are garnering the majority of the first round attention as Bama receivers, Smith has had the best season of them all. Smith is an incredible route runner from his footwork to his head fakes. He has a knack for finding open spaces in the defense and Tua had a knack for finding him when he was open.

While Jeudy and Ruggs are the more flashy, athletic, big-play receivers on the Crimson Tide, Smith was Tua’s go-to target. He gets open when he has to make a play, and still has the capability to make some big plays of his own.

This situation would look a little like the 2019 Crimson Tide offense to me. The Dolphins already have two very talented receivers that could play on the outside next year. Undrafted rookie receiver Preston Williams was incredibly impressive before an injury prematurely ended his first pro campaign. Lately, former first-round pick DeVante Parker has been on fire, as he just lit up the Eagles secondary for over 150 yards and two touchdowns.

Smith could come in as a second round pick with little pressure and little attention from the opposition. He and Tua could continue to build their rapport, helping the development of them both. I think Devonta Smith ends up going in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft when it’s all said and done but if he’s on the board at 61 and I’m the Miami Dolphins, I’m giddy to send in that pick.
