Tannehill has been solid, but Titans still need to find QB in 2020 NFL Draft
Despite the recent play of Ryan Tannehill, the Tennessee Titans still need to find a long-term solution to their quarterback troubles in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Ryan Tannehill led the Tennessee Titans to an impressive and unlikely 35-32 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. Tennessee is now 3-1 with Tannehill as their starting quarterback and he has kept their playoff hopes alive up until this point.
Tannehill is a better option than Marcus Mariota, but do not be fooled by his small sample size, he is a stop-gap option at best going forward. He has played well for the Titans, but make no mistake about, he is not the long-term answer at the quarterback position for the team.
No matter what happens the rest of the season, the Titans should still enter the 2020 NFL Draft with the quarterback position on their mind. Nothing is more important than finding a true franchise quarterback, and while Tannehill is playing well, the Titans simply do not have their franchise quarterback on the roster.
Unless they make a significant move up the board, the Titans are unlikely to be in a position to draft Tua Tagovailoa or Joe Burrow in the 2020 NFL Draft. However, the upcoming draft class has some nice depth at the quarterback position. Tennessee will likely have an opportunity to take a chance on a new franchise quarterback in the first or second round of the 2020 NFL Draft if they wish.
Justin Herbert stands out as the ideal fit for this team. If Tennessee ends up picking in the top 12 or so and Herbert slips a bit down the board, they could put themselves in a position to take the Oregon signal-caller. Herbert is a bit of a raw player, but he has fantastic natural arm talent and big-time upside at the next level.
In this scenario, the Titans could bring Herbert along slowly, continuing to start Tannehill next season, while Herbert learns from the bench. This could be the kind of situation that would give Herbert the best chance to succeed at the next level. Similar high-risk, high-reward quarterbacks like Jacob Eason, Jalen Hurts and Jordan Love would also seemingly be perfect fits for this kind of scenario.
I could also see Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm being on their radar if he declares for the 2020 NFL Draft. Fromm does not have the natural arm talent and upside of some of these guys, but he is a smart and dependable player who could just what the Titans need.
Whether the Titans take a guy like Herbert in the first round or hope someone falls to them in the second, quarterback undoubtedly needs to be on their radar in the 2020 NFL Draft. This is a good team with a lot of talent on both sides of the ball. Tannehill will do for now, but if they want to take the next step into competitiveness, the Titans need to find a real long-term solution at the quarterback position.
