The Browns are right there with the Falcons in terms of disappointing seasons. After rather lofty expectations this offseason with the acquisition of a lot of talented players by general manager John Dorsey, the Browns have been plain bad.
Odell Beckham Jr. has grown frustrated with his lack of usage, the defense can’t tackle and is blowing coverages, and Baker Mayfield seems to have regressed. Like I said about Sam Darnold with the Jets pick, I think a lot of that has to do with his lack of trust in his offensive line.
Bringing in Tristan Wirfs out of Iowa would provide Mayfield with a stable and solid blindside protector, and would be a start in terms of reshaping the offensive line. Wirfs, like Andrew Thomas, has an incredible combination of athleticism and raw strength. Wirfs may be just a little more raw in terms of technique, but the two are both top-notch tackle prospects and the best of the 2020 NFL Draft class.
Wirfs is quick enough to protect against finesse moves from edge rushers and powerful enough to move mountains in the run game. He is a ferocious competitor who plays through the whistle on every play. He packs a powerful punch and is outstanding moving the defender once engaged to open holes.
While Wirfs has experience playing both right and left tackle, I would wager that the Browns are looking for their left tackle of the future. Someone to protect Baker’s blindside now that Joe Thomas is no longer in the fold.
Greg Robinson has had his ups and downs but is not the long-term solution. He has even been benched this season in favor of Justin McCray. The Browns need to sure up the offensive line if they want to reach the goals that they had outlined for themselves to start the 2019 season. Otherwise, there is a ton of talent going to waste in Cleveland.
