2020 NFL Draft: Seven scouting takeaways from LSU-Alabama
5. K’Lavon Chaisson Is A Great Chess Piece
LSU edge rusher K’Lavon Chaisson also put on a good performance. Chaisson has a wicked first step and has the athleticism to create pressure by bending around the edge. In fact, he created pressure by doing just that against another top prospect, Alabama tackle Alex Leatherwood.
Chaisson isn’t just a talented edge rusher. He can also make plays in space as a linebacker. We’ve seen him drop into coverage and make plays with his speed in space, and he also can close on plays in space to create tackles for loss.
The ability to be versatile is what teams will like about Chaisson, and that could vault him up boards.
6. DeVonta Smith Continues To Produce
The Alabama wide receiver trio is the best in the nation. While most of the attention goes to Jeudy and Henry Ruggs, DeVonta Smith has produced some big games this season. He caught seven passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns in the game.
His two touchdown receptions went for 64 and 85 yards, where both times he created good separation.
Smith shows some flashes because of the traits he possesses. He has a great release and has the deep speed to outrun defenders down the field. Smith has great hands and can make plays in contested situations. If he were to declare, Smith would definitely be a day two pick.
7. Grant Delpit’s Tackling Struggles Continue
LSU safety Grant Delpit came into the season as one of the top prospects for the 2020 NFL Draft. He is still in that upper echelon, but he’s had a less than stellar season. He has the range, ball skills, and instincts to be an excellent safety at the next level, but he’s had some tackling issues this season coming downhill to make plays.
He gets a little overly aggressive instead of breaking down and form tackling. It happened against the Crimson Tide a bit on Saturday. Granted, he was playing on a sprained ankle, but it’s becoming a trend.
