The 2020 NFL Draft process is starting with Senior Bowl invites going out. Two Cal defenders are among the first to accept their invites.

We are well on our way diving into the 2020 NFL Draft and that process begins with the all-star games. The East-West Shrine Game and the Senior Bowl are the first steps in a fun draft process and the Senior Bowl invites are starting to be accepted.

Early in the Senior Bowl invite process, we see a couple of Cal defenders accept invites. Safety Ashtyn Davis and linebacker Evan Weaver will get to show scouts and the draft community that they will be the real deal at the next level.

Davis is one of the bright spots at the safety position in the 2020 NFL Draft class. He is an aggressive safety with excellent range to play on the back end of the defense. Davis also has the speed to fly downhill and is a great tackler. He also has great anticipation and ball skills to be a playmaker.

With his speed, teams may want to see how he fares in one-on-ones against receivers and if he can play corner. A great week in Mobile could vault him near the first round, especially with teams that need help on the back end of their defense.

The linebacker class is another group that is a bit lackluster right now. Weaver has improved a lot in 2019. He is a great downhill linebacker with good instincts and a nose for the football. Weaver can disengage from blocks very well and plays sound, sticking to his assigned gap. The issue with Weaver is his ability in coverage.

His lack of speed and quickness make him an early-down linebacker right now. It will be interesting to watch him in one-on-ones against running backs to see if there’s any improvement in his coverage ability. A solid week down in Mobile won’t send him up boards like Davis, but teams will still covet talented linebackers like Weaver in the middle of the 2020 NFL Draft.
