2020 NFL Draft: First-round mock draft where Chase Young goes No. 1
Offensive tackle stands out as a major need for a lot of these teams picking in the top ten. Once the 2020 NFL Draft rolls around, I expect that we will see at least one more offensive tackle rise the ranks and end up being drafted higher than we currently expect. That being said, for now, Andrew Thomas and Tristan Wirfs are the only players at the position who are under consideration this high.
With Thomas already off of the board, Wirfs stands out as an obvious choice for the New York Jets here at number five. If the Jets cannot start to protect Sam Darnold better, they are going to stunt his development and are unlikely to be contenders anytime soon. The Jets need to start investing in their offensive line and it begins with the selection of Wirfs at number five.
Wirfs is an impressive offensive tackle prospect who has an elite combination of power and athleticism at the position. He moves extremely well for such a big man and can dominate at the point of attack. Wirfs is a fantastic run blocker who can easily steer defenders out of the way or drive them to the ground. He also shows the quickness needed to reach the second level consistently.
He has all of the tools to be a dominant pass protector as well. Wirfs can handle speed around the edge and anchors against power at an extremely high level. He does have some mental lapses in some blitz situations, but that should get cleaned up with more experience.
Wirfs is a fantastic right tackle prospect who has also shown the ability to dominate at the left tackle position. No matter which side the Jets would decide to put him on, Wirfs would be an immediate improvement and would quickly become an important centerpiece of their entire offense.
