2020 NFL Draft: Jalen Hurts “best realistic option” for Chicago Bears
Could the Chicago Bears get in position to land Jalen Hurts in the 2020 NFL Draft?
The Chicago Bears would undoubtedly love to find a new quarterback in the 2020 NFL Draft. They will still work to make the most out of their current situation with Mitchell Trubisky, but it is beginning to look like Trubisky is a lost cause. If they can find a way to find a new starting quarterback this offseason, the Bears will likely pounce on the opportunity.
Unfortunately, the Bears do not have a first-round 2020 NFL draft pick, making it difficult for them to find a new signal-caller through the upcoming draft. That being said, based on how the quarterbacks fall in the draft, they may be able to be in the conversation.
Matt Miller of Bleacher Report recently put together a post where he paired 10 perfect team and player fits for the 2020 NFL Draft. Among the perfect fits on the list is Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts paired with the Chicago Bears.
Here is what Miller had to say about this fit:
"“If Round 2 is where the Bears will draft competition and/or a replacement for Mitchell Trubisky, they can hope Oklahoma’s Jalen Hurts doesn’t follow in the footsteps of his predecessors and hear his name called No. 1 overall,” Miller wrote. “Hurts isn’t your traditional quarterback prospect, which is what the Bears need after going the ultra-traditional route with Trubisky. Hurts—a fiery leader and electric dual-threat—is the anti-Trubisky in many ways.”“He has his warts as a one-year wonder in the passing game, but going back to his starts at Alabama, he’s always been able to take over games with his football IQ and athleticism.”“If teams believe his passing mechanics and decisions have improved under Riley, the Bears might have to package both second-rounders in order to acquire him; but right now, Hurts looks like the best realistic option for the Bears to cure their quarterback troubles.”"
Earlier this week, I put together a two-round 2020 NFL mock draft. In that mock draft, I had the Chicago Bears snagging Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm in the second round. However, if the Bears can somehow find themselves in a position to land Hurts, they need to jump on the opportunity. Miller is right, he would be a perfect fit for this team.
Hurts has turned himself into an extremely intriguing quarterback prospect this season. With obvious athleticism and drastically improved accuracy and decision-making ability, Hurts has a chance to become a star at the next level if he can continue to improve. He is a fringe first-round prospect who undoubtedly has a high ceiling.
The Chicago Bears are potentially a quarterback away from being legitimate Super Bowl contenders. Giving up on Trubisky is tough, but Hurts undoubtedly has a chance to be that quarterback who can put this team over the top. Getting in a position to draft Hurts will not be easy, but with two second-round picks, it is at least possible if general manager Ryan Pace is willing to be aggressive.
