17. player. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. DT. South Carolina. Javon Kinlaw. 46

Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard has done a great job of building their defense in recent years. Ballard and his staff have been extremely patient and have built a defense that is talented enough to help this team compete for a championship. However, this team has obvious needs on the interior defensive line and have a great opportunity to add some talent to that position here.

Javon Kinlaw is has been one of the fastest risers in the 2020 NFL draft class in recent weeks. Through seven games, Kinlaw has five tackles for loss and five sacks, but he does much more than just fill the stat sheet.

Kinlaw is an absolute freak on the inside. His elite combination of quickness and power on the interior makes him an incredibly difficult player to block and gives him massive upside at the next level. Kinlaw explodes off of the ball with a great first step and gets his hands into the opposing offensive lineman quickly. He uses his great length to keep blockers off of him and shows impressive natural block shed ability.

The Colts have done a nice job of finding unique athletes on the defensive side of the ball in recent years. They clearly look for more explosive players who can make big plays at their position. Kinlaw can two-gap when asked to do so, but he is an explosive one-gap penetrator who can make plays in the backfield against the run and as a pass rusher. He feels like a great fit for this defense.
