Scouting Report. Iowa. Tristan Wirfs. 1. 878. Pick Analysis. OT. player

I would have Georgia offensive tackle Andrew Thomas going to the New York Giants here, but I believe that he’ll be just out of reach for the New York Giants when they select around 10.

But who says Iowa’s OT Tristan Wirfs isn’t as par, or even better due to less talent neighboring the current Hawkeye?

After leading the Iowa offensive line to a Big-Ten best 16 sacks allowed in 2018, Wirfs caught scouts attention. Individually, Pro Football Focus had Wirfs with zero sacks and four QB hits allowed in 2018. Those are numbers that will catch any NFL coaches eye whose team allowed 47 sacks in 2018.

Though, what will really catch the Giants’ attention is the stature of the 6-foot-5, 322-pound offensive tackle and his talent in the run-blocking game that will inevitably open the way for their franchise running back.

Wirfs possesses a strength and work ethic in the weight room that shows on the field, driving his defenders away from the quarterback and opening wide holes for his running backs. He also obtains good control when his hands are on the rusher. His recovery after a small mistake is what makes him stand out, as most edge rushers cannot find their way around him.

Wirfs has also shown some versatility this season. Wirfs typically plays right tackle for Iowa but was forced to the blindside when starting left tackle Alaric Jackson went down in the first game of the season. When Wirfs was filling in for Jackson on the left side, he was just as dominant as he typically is. He put up some phenomenal film at left tackle filling in for Jackson.

If Barkley is putting up top numbers weekly with New York’s current offensive line situation, just imagine what he can do if the New York Giants vastly increase the production surrounding him. When it comes down to it, the New York Giants must draft the top offensive lineman on the board the first time they are on the clock, regardless of their placement in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Giants seem to have found their offensive weapons going forward (Barkley and Jones), now they just need to help them to reach full potential.
