Colin Kaepernick, Free Agent

Whenever there is a quarterback vacancy in the NFL, Colin Kaepernick is seemingly always brought up in conversation. While the dual-threat QB hasn’t played in the NFL since 2016, many believe that he would still be a better option for many teams than they currently have on their roster.

As most of the world knows, Kaepernick began the movement of kneeling during the national anthem to raise awareness for social injustice in America. Ever since, the former Super Bowl quarterback has not been signed to an NFL team despite his expressed desire to play.

In the last two seasons that Kaep was under center for the 49ers, he posted a QB record of 3-16. He still had decent stats during these seasons and does have a 4-2 record in the playoffs. But the real question is whether Kaepernick is still a high-quality quarterback in this league. The answer? No one knows until you give him a chance to prove it.

If Mahomes is out for an extended period of time, the Kansas City Chiefs can only benefit from bringing in Kaepernick for a workout. Give him a chance to show that he still has what it takes to lead an NFL team. If he performs well and looks like his old self, you found yourself a new, dynamic quarterback. If he isn’t quite as sharp as he was three years ago, you can move on and look at other options.

A Colin Kaepernick that plays like he did in 2013 would make the Chiefs offense very hard to stop. Kaep had the ability to make nearly any throw and was an elite runner as a quarterback. It’s hard telling if he would still be close to that level of play after being away from the game for so long, but it shouldn’t take long to realize one way or the other in a simple workout with an NFL team like the Chiefs.
