Cam Newton: Best Trade Destinations for a Former League MVP
By Ian Higgins
Indianapolis Colts
Quarterback: Jacoby Brissett
Running Back: Marlon Mack, Nyheim Hines
Receiving: T.Y. Hilton, Eric Ebron
Hopes, dreams, ambitions, and a possible trip to the super bowl were all that filled the Indianapolis Colts organization. Then it happened. A young, intelligent, talented star quarterback subjected to the torment of poor offensive line play and inadequate talent finally retired, leaving his former franchise in disarray. That was the state of the Indianapolis Colts heading into the 2019-20 NFL season. Jacoby Brissett is by no means an unusable quarterback, but he is not going to lead this team to the promised land. This team is built for sustained success with young assets on good contracts, and an offense that can complement whichever quarterback takes position under center.
Newton could provide a new look to this Colts team that still follows the prior game-planning for Brissett. Simplified reads and the use of Eric Ebron and T.Y. Hilton is space that can give this offense consistent production. Moving to a west coast offense with a taste of Newton’s athleticism carrying the ball could be a welcome change to an otherwise standard Colts team, with a strong defense to complement.
Indianapolis doesn’t have the star power at running back that many other teams can bolster, but Marlon Mack and Nyheim Hines are by no means bench-warmers. Hines is the stronger of the two in the receiving game, able to provide check-downs and easy reads to Newton. Most likely, Newton would become a focal point of the rushing attack, using more options to split the ball between Newton and his backs.
Indianapolis could wait to acquire a quarterback, someone younger with a different skillset. Or they could make the play to win now and look for a legitimate run with Newton within the next 2 years. This Indianapolis team is ready to win this year and should by no means be considered out of contention for a legitimate playoff run.
