2020 NFL Draft: First-round mock draft includes Joe Burrow in top 12
If I were making this pick for the Miami Dolphins, the quarterback position would not really be in the discussion. In my opinion, Tagovailoa is head and shoulders the best quarterback in the 2020 NFL draft class and anybody else would be a reach in the top three.
That being said, I have a hard time believing that the real-life Dolphins are going to leave the first round of the actual 2020 NFL Draft without a quarterback. With that in mind, I gave them Oregon’s Justin Herbert with the second overall pick of this mock draft.
Herbert has all of the physical tools that NFL scouts love at the quarterback position. He has ideal size, a live arm and plenty of athleticism and mobility. He is also generally an accurate passer who places the ball well at all levels. There is a lot to like about Herbert’s game and it is easy to see how he could become a star at the next level. That being said, he has to improve his decision making in order for that to happen.
Herbert tends to lock onto one target throughout the play and simply waits for him to get open. If the receiver doesn’t get open, he takes off and runs. Herbert does not read through progressions well and does not show much of an ability to adapt to what the defense is doing. With the proper NFL coaching, this could all change, but as of right now, the mental side of Herbert’s game is unimpressive.
If Herbert can improve in this area, he could become an absolute star at the next level. That being said, as things stand now, he is a risky pick this early in the 2020 NFL Draft.
