Round 1, Pick 17: Tristan Wirfs, OT, Iowa

After trading away Laremy Tunsil early this season, the Miami Dolphins have obvious holes at the offensive tackle position. Their entire offensive line is a mess and will have to be pretty much rebuilt over the next few offseasons. If the Dolphins are going to properly rebuild around Tagovailoa, they are going to have to find him players who can protect him up front.

With the 17th overall pick of this mock draft, Miami takes a step in the right direction, selecting Iowa offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs. If we are being honest, Wirfs is unlikely to slip to the middle of the first when the actual draft rolls around. However, with the Dolphins holding so many picks, where these actual selections end up is completely up in the air. Miami could easily be in a position to make Tagovailoa and Wirfs their first two picks of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Wirfs is an absolute monster on the offensive line. He is a ridiculously strong and powerful player who consistently dominates at the point of attack. Wirfs is a devastating run blocker who has enough mobility and quickness to consistently reach the second level, and once he is engaged, it is game over.

On top of being a strong run blocker, Wirfs is a fantastic pass protector. He moves his feet well and shows a powerful, accurate punch in pass protection. Wirfs shows a good ability to mirror opposing edge rushers and has fantastic anchor against power.

At Iowa, Wirfs has primarily played right tackle. However, the injury to Iowa left tackle Alaric Jackson has forced Wirfs to play some left tackle this season. No matter what side he plays on, Wirfs has consistently dominated throughout his college career and should be able to handle either offensive tackle position at the next level.

Simply put, Wirfs would be the perfect player to build this Dolphins’ offensive line around and an immediate contributor for this team.
