Pittsburgh Steelers make a risky trade for Minkah Fitzpatrick
Pittsburgh Steelers swing for the fences in Minkah Fitzpatrick trade with the Miami Dolphins.
Minkah Fitzpatrick is a fantastic football player who many NFL teams should have been willing to give up a first-round pick to get him on their teams. However, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Pittsburgh Steelers were the team to take the plunge, sending their 2020 first-round pick to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for Fitzpatrick.
In a word, this trade was risky for the Steelers. Fitzpatrick is an incredibly talented defensive back who is going to immediately help them in the secondary. However, making this deal on the same day that they learned that they will be without quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for the entire is an interesting decision.
At this point, we do not know what Mason Rudolph can do for the Pittsburgh Steelers at the quarterback position. Rudolph is a talented player who looked solid in his first game action on Sunday, but he is far from a sure thing going forward. The Steelers are already 0-2. If Rudolph ends up being a disaster, it is going to be difficult to dig themselves out of this hole.
With Roethlisberger out for the year, it is not inconceivable that the Steelers win fewer than five games this season. If this happens, this Fitzpatrick trade could become a massive disaster.
I do think Steelers fans should be excited about this deal. Fitzpatrick is an incredibly talented and versatile defensive back who is going to greatly improve a position of need for the Steelers. He is one of the best slot cornerbacks in the NFL and can certainly make an impact at the safety position as well. Getting Fitzpatrick into the mix is a positive step in the right direction for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
However, this has the potential to go poorly if the bottom falls out. The Steelers clearly have confidence that Rudolph can win them games going forward. If they are wrong and they continue to struggle, this team may end up regretting this trade in a major way.
