Kansas City Chiefs

A year ago, the Kansas City Chiefs and Pat Mahomes broke through as the most dynamic offense in the NFL. After coming just one game shy of a Super Bowl in Mahomes’ first year as a starter, expectations were through the roof for the Chiefs coming into this season.

A lot of those expectations had to do with what should be an improved defense and secondary. After their performance last season, that shouldn’t have been hard to do. The Chiefs secondary was nothing short of abysmal last year, forcing Mahomes and the offense to win shootout after shootout in order to make it as far as they did.

This offseason, the Chiefs added valuable pieces in safeties Tyrann Mathieu and rookie Juan Thornhill. These versatile players should help sure up the back end of the secondary going forward for Kansas City, but they still don’t have top-notch corners. Enter Jalen Ramsey.

Ramsey would provide even more star power to a rising squad with lofty expectations. The corners that the Chiefs have right now aren’t horrible. Kendall Fuller was good for them last season after being traded from Washington for Alex Smith. Bashaud Breeland has been a decent corner in the league since being drafted in 2014 by the Redskins but has not proved himself as a sure-fire starter and lockdown corner.

Adding Jalen Ramsey would make the Chiefs secondary dangerous. With Ramsey anchoring down one side of the field, and Mathieu and Thornhill roaming around the rest of the secondary, it would be hard to throw on Kansas City. The Chiefs have been missing a true playmaking corner since trading Marcus Peters to the Rams prior to last season. Ramsey would come in and be that presence on the outside.

Adding an All-Pro corner to a team that is already 2-0 and looking as impressive as ever would be worrisome for the rest of the league. With the Patriots adding Antonio Brown last week, it is clear that roster complacency isn’t an option if you want to make the Super Bowl. Ramsey could be just what the Chiefs need to get over that hump and live up to their potential this season.
