Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Time has run out for Jameis Winston
How many times does he have to prove it? Jameis Winston simply is not good enough for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They need to move on as soon as possible.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers rolled into the 2019 season like nothing was wrong. “Hey, maybe Bruce Arians can fix him?” Nope, Jameis Winston is still terrible and is going to hold this franchise back as long as they continue to fool themselves into thinking he can be their franchise quarterback.
In the season-opening game against the San Francisco 49ers, Winston completed 20-of-36 passes for 194 yards and a touchdown. He also threw three interceptions, two of which were put on a platter for the 49ers to return for touchdowns.
Winston has been nothing but a disappointment for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, ever since they drafted him with the first overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. He has been a distraction off of the field and consistent under-performer on it. Winston has had consistent accuracy issues in the NFL and is a terrible decision-maker at the quarterback position. As long as he continues to line up under center, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will continue to be among the worst teams in the NFL.
With Winston playing out the final year of his rookie contract, the Bucs simply must move on this offseason. It is not easy to move on from a franchise quarterback who you took number one overall, but it is time for Tampa Bay to be honest, the Winston era is over.
The quarterback position should be their number one priority next offseason. Whether they find themselves in a position to land Tua Tagovailoa or Justin Herbert at the top of the 2020 NFL Draft, or they attack their need with some sort of veteran/rookie combo, the Bucs must find a replacement for Winston.
In fact, if I were running the show in Tampa Bay, I would look to make a quarterback change immediately. See what Blaine Gabbert can bring to the table or give Ryan Griffin a chance. They could even look to find a young undervalued quarterback on the open market and try to groom him to start some games this season.
We just saw sixth-round rookie Gardner Minshew look fantastic in his NFL debut for the Jacksonville Jaguars last weekend. Why not search the waiver wire and team’s practice squad and try to find your own young quarterback to give a chance this season? You never know what you might find.
When it comes down to it, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are not going to be competitive in the NFC South this season. They will continue to be the bottom feeders of the division until they move on from Winston and figure out their quarterback situation. With this in mind, why wait to make the move? How many chances does this guy deserve to prove himself?
