A deep breakdown of the Atlanta Falcons 53-man roster
Cornerbacks
- Desmond Trufant
- Isaiah Oliver
- Damontae Kazee
- Blidi Wreh-Wilson
- Jordan Miller
- Kendall Sheffield
Desmond Trufant is the clear number one corner on this team but behind him, the cornerback room has gotten a lot younger after releasing Robert Alford in the offseason. Isaiah Oliver will step into a starting role alongside Trufant going into his second year. As a rookie, he had 23 tackles and one interception and he looks to have a bigger role with more playing time this year so hopefully, his numbers will only increase.
Damontae Kazee has a strong second-year last season with 82 tackles and seven interceptions and looks to have even a bigger role in 2019 playing the corner in the slot. He played at safety last year for injured Keanu Neal and stood out the most on a defense that was injury-plagued.
The backend of the cornerback position is filled by veteran Blidi Wreh-Wilson and two rookies Jordan Miller and Kendall Sheffield. Sheffield was drafted during the fourth round and Miller was taken in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL draft and the Atlanta Falcons finally have some young talent on the roster to groom.
Safeties
- Keanu Neal
- Kemal Ishmael
- Ricardo Allen
- Sharrod Neasman
No changes amongst the safeties this year as Keanu Neal and Kemal Ishmael are still one, two, respectfully at the strong safety position. Ricardo Allen and Sharrod Neasman remain the two in charge of the free safety slot. This is one of the strongest areas on the Atlanta Falcons defense as a whole that should once again put up solid numbers in 2019.
Keanu Neal had two very good seasons to start his career being a former first-round draft pick in 2017. He’s had over 100 tackles in each of those seasons before going down to injury in 2018 and missing the whole season.
Ricardo Allen is a five-year veteran who has been productive for being a fifth-round pick back in 2015. He’s totaled 230 career tackles, one sack, and seven interceptions with his best season coming in 2016 when the Falcons went to the Super Bowl.
Veteran safety J.J. Wilcox was battling three-year safety Sharrod Neasman for the backup strong safety spot before his ACL injury that sidelined him for the year.
