LSU QB Joe Burrow becoming an interesting 2020 NFL Draft prospect
Can LSU quarterback Joe Burrow continue to impress and establish himself as a 2020 NFL Draft prospect to watch?
The 2020 NFL Draft class is led by quarterbacks Justin Herbert and Tua Tagovailoa at the top. Both guys are impressive prospects who will likely go extremely high in the NFL draft next April. However, there is certainly room for quarterbacks behind Herbert and Tagovailoa to make their mark and get themselves in the first-round conversation.
After their 55-3 victory over Georgia Southern on opening weekend, LSU has been one of the talks of college football this week. It had less to do with them beating up on an inferior opponent and more to do with their style of play. After years of struggling by with a pro-style offense, the Tigers showcased a new spread offense on Saturday and it drew rave reviews.
Senior quarterback Joe Burrow looked particularly comfortable in the offense, completing 23-of-27 passes for 278 yards and five touchdowns. He looked completely in control in the new offense, spreading the ball all over the field and consistently making the right throw to an open receiver.
Burrow is entering his senior season at LSU and has not really been on the NFL Draft radar. However, if he can continue to put up gaudy numbers like this, we are going to have to pay attention.
Burrow is a smart and technically sound quarterback who controls the offense extremely well. He is excellent in the short passing game, finding the right guy to throw to, getting the ball out quickly and placing the ball with accuracy. He does not have the most impressive arm strength, but it is not like he is working with nothing in that department. Burrow can fit the ball in tight spaces with some velocity when needed.
His best trait is probably his athleticism and mobility as a quarterback. Burrow can escape the pocket when needed and shows impressive accuracy when throwing on the run. He is an elusive runner in the open field and has the speed to create yardage on his own when necessary. Burrow is also an extremely tough and competitive quarterback who is not afraid to put his body on the line when his team needs him to make a play.
Joe Burrow may ultimately be limited by his lack of arm strength as an NFL draft prospect. That being said, his combination of on-field awareness, accuracy and mobility gives him a chance. If this scheme change continues to take well, Burrow is going to rise up draft boards. He may never really enter the round one conversation, but Burrow could certainly be an interesting guy to consider in the middle rounds.
I am going to have a close eye on Burrow this weekend as he takes on a tough Texas defense. If he dominates again, Burrow could quickly become a hot name in NFL draft circles.
