2020 NFL Draft: First round mock draft as the NFL season begins
1. Miami Dolphins: Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Alabama
The Miami Dolphins are clearly in tank mode. They are stockpiling as many picks as possible, and after trading Laremy Tunsil and Kenny Stills to the Houston Texans, it is clear that they do not have much interest in being competitive in 2019.
Personally, I like the idea of the Dolphins building up their offense in the 2020 NFL Draft to support a quarterback drafted in 2021. Trevor Lawrence would be the obvious target. However, trading down from number one would be the best plan of attack in that scenario. In this mock draft, trades are not allowed so taking a quarterback made the most sense.
Josh Rosen will get an opportunity this season to prove himself as the Miami Dolphins’ franchise quarterback going forward. However, if the Dolphins hold the first overall pick as they do in this mock draft, I am willing to bet that the Rosen experiment has not gone well. Simply put, taking Tua Tagovailoa is the most logical decision to make here.
Tagovailoa is an impressive quarterback prospect who excels in a variety of areas. He possesses a strong throwing arm, is accurate to all fields, understands how to read defenses and has good mobility. Tagovailoa has a legitimate NFL skill-set and has proven himself as a dynamic playmaker in college.
Instead of sitting back and hoping to fall into a franchise quarterback, the Dolphins step up and take their guy. Tagovailoa is an elite-level quarterback prospect who could come in and quickly change the direction of the Dolphins’ franchise for the better. He would not have much help on the offensive side of the ball right away in this scenario, but passing on him when quarterback is such an obvious need is a tough decision to make.
