Cleveland Browns rookie CB Greedy Williams improving his biggest weakness
Cleveland Browns rookie cornerback Greedy Williams is improving the biggest weakness in his game.
The Cleveland Browns snagging cornerback Greedy Williams in the second round was one of the biggest steals in the 2019 NFL Draft. Many in the draft community considered Williams to be the top cornerback in the draft class and obvious first-round talent.
The Browns did not have a first-round pick because of the Odell Beckham, but they were still able to land a first-round talent at an important position of need. Snagging Williams where they did was the best-case scenario for Cleveland.
Williams is a top-tier cover corner whose combination of size, speed and length consistently stand out on tape. He is a sticky man-coverage defender who reacts to receiver movement well and attacks the ball in the air like an All-Pro defensive back. In coverage, Williams consistently shines. However, in college, he really struggled to make an impact against the run.
This issue seemed to be more of an effort thing. Williams simply was not willing to stick his nose in there and make plays against the run often. He did not work hard to shed blocks, commonly being satisfied to allow the receiver to block him.
This was the biggest weakness in Williams’ game and simply that must improve at the next level in order for him to reach his full potential. Early in his Cleveland Browns career, Williams has done a nice job against the run, significantly improving the biggest weakness in his game.
Browns coaches have taken note of Williams’ improvement against the run.
In the Browns preseason debut last Thursday, Williams looked like a new player against the run. He made two tackles near the line of scrimmage on outside run plays, one where he took the ball carrier down for a loss. He showed a willingness to shed blocks and protect the edge against the run. He has also done a nice job of tackling in space.
Williams is an incredibly talented cornerback who has big-time upside at the next level. If he can continue to improve his ability against the run, Williams will likely play a major role for the Browns as a rookie in 2019.
