2019 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year sleepers
Who will be the 2019 NFL offensive rookie of the year? Could it be who was drafted after the first round? Let’s take a look at some sleepers who could contend for the award.
Miles Sanders, RB, Philadelphia Eagles
Miles Sanders should have a great chance to secure the lead role in the Philadelphia Eagles backfield. Despite the acquisition of former 1,000-yard rusher Jordan Howard, Sanders was incredibly explosive in college and has reportedly been the most explosive back throughout camp.
The Eagles boast a dynamic offense led by former NFL MVP front-runner Carson Wentz, who hopes to return healthy and to his MVP form this season. In such an efficient, pass-first offense, Sanders should thrive with his versatility and effectiveness as a receiver out of the backfield.
Sanders received just three carries managing three yards in his preseason debut but the Philly offense was pretty stagnant as a whole against the Titans, so we will hopefully get a better look at what Sanders can do in game action going forward.
If Sanders is able to lock in a prominent role on an explosive Eagles offense, he could be a front runner for offensive rookie of the year.
David Montgomery, RB, Chicago Bears
Former Iowa State back, David Montgomery, is listed behind both Tarik Cohen and former Seahawk Mike Davis on the Chicago Bears depth chart. However, Montgomery has the talent to be the lead back and many expect him to be just that.
Cohen has primarily been utilized as a receiver out of the backfield alongside Jordan Howard for the Bears and Davis has typically been a part of a committee in Seattle. Montgomery could carve out a role as the feature, between-the-tackles runner in Chicago.
A tackle-breaking specialist in college, the slippery back has already shown his effectiveness in the preseason. Montgomery ran just three times but managed 16 yards and a touchdown.
As part of an up-and-coming offense on a serious contender in the NFC, Montgomery should be a great asset going forward and could make an immediate impact as a rookie.
