Miami Dolphins: UDFA WR Preston Williams is the player to watch this preseason
Miami Dolphins undrafted rookie receiver Preston Williams is drawing rave reviews in training camp. Can he continue to shine through the preseason?
The Miami Dolphins are a team clearly in the middle of a rebuild. They are building their roster for the future, with little emphasis on short-term success. Part of this process is giving a chance to undervalued young players with NFL upside. Colorado State wide receiver Preston Williams is the perfect example of this.
Williams is a former highly-coveted recruit who started his college career at Tennessee but was forced out after a domestic violence arrest. He eventually landed at Colorado State, where Williams dominated for one season. In 2018, Williams piled up 96 receptions for 1,345 yards and 14 touchdowns. The character is obviously a concern, but there is no doubt about Williams’ ability on the field.
At 6-foot-4, 211 pounds, Williams is a big and athletic receiver who has massive upside at the next level. He shows impressive long speed and good short-area quickness for a receiver of his size, runs crisp routes and fights hard for the ball in the air. He also shows impressive run after catch ability, consistently creating extra yardage with an impressive combination of power and speed.
Williams showed obvious NFL ability in college and he has backed it up so far in training camp. According to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, Williams has been a star of camp and the “most impressive rookie of training camp so far.”
Now, it’s time for Williams to show it on the field for the Miami Dolphins. He is undoubtedly one of the most important players to watch this preseason. The Dolphins kick off their preseason slate against the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night and Williams will undoubtedly be a focus of their offensive attack.
He will have ample opportunity to prove himself this preseason and if Williams can continue to shine when the lights come on, he will have a legitimate chance to make the Dolphins’ 53-man roster. From there, who knows what kind of impact he can make.
