2020 NFL Draft: Sleeper contenders to be No. 1 overall pick
Grant Delpit, S, LSU
LSU safety Grant Delpit could easily become the best defensive player in the 2020 NFL Draft. He is an absolute animal in the defensive backfield showing a well-rounded skill-set that will have all NFL teams drooling. The position he plays is the only reason he is not among the favorites to go number one overall.
In the 90-year history of the NFL Draft, only one defensive back has ever gone first overall (Colorado State safety Gary Glick to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1956). Even though he will undoubtedly be one of the best defenders in the draft class, Delpit has the odds stacked against him. That being said, with teams valuing versatile defensive backs more than ever before, I would not count him out just yet.
Delpit is a jack-of-all-trades at the safety position. He is a ferocious downhill defender who can shoot into the box and consistently make plays against the run. He also has tremendous natural man-to-man and zone coverage skills. Basically, Delpit can defend the run like a linebacker, can lock down most receivers like a corner and can defend the back-end like an elite deep safety.
For good measure, he is also a fantastic athlete, extremely intelligent player and shows great ball skills. Simply put, this guy can do it all.
In today’s NFL, teams need versatile defenders who can make an impact against the run and the pass. With his well-rounded skill-set Delpit can come in and immediately shine in both areas. It would take the right team making the pick, but do not sleep on Delpit as the possible number one overall selection in the 2020 NFL Draft.
