2020 NFL Draft: Jordan Love could be a sleeper first-round QB prospect
Jordan Love is undoubtedly a 2020 NFL Draft quarterback prospect to watch this season.
The 2020 NFL Draft certainly has some interesting talent at the quarterback position. Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert stand out as the top signal-callers in the class and both will be a threat to go first overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. Jake Fromm is also a likely first-round pick. After those three, there is currently a lot of unknown at the position.
Anything can happen with an entire season left to play. However, the next quarterback prospect who seems the most likely to make a run at the first round is Jordan Love out of Utah State. Love is unlikely to threaten Tagovailoa or Herbert at the top, but he is a talented quarterback prospect who can significantly improve his NFL draft stock over the next year.
Love enters his redshirt junior season with impressive accuracy to all levels of the field. Accuracy is the single most important trait for an NFL quarterback and Love will enter the league with that being one of his biggest strength.
He also shows the ability to put the proper touch on his passes when needed. Love can place the ball extremely well with touch when the situation calls for it and can also fit it into tight spaces with velocity. The best part of this is that he understands when proper touch is needed. He will not try to float a pass in there when velocity is needed and vice versa.
Love also shows good arm strength, hitting receivers in stride down the field. He arm talent is not overwhelming, but he does have enough to make all the throws on the football field. On top of all this, the Utah State product is an extremely mobile quarterback who can create plays with his legs. However, he does not just simply tuck and run at the first sight of danger. Love does a great job of keeping his eyes downfield and is a tremendous passer on the run.
While Love is an exciting quarterback prospect who does a lot of things that will translate well to the next level, he does still have some work to do. In what will likely be his final season in college, I would like to see Love improve at reading defenses and making decisions.
With his obvious talent, Love likes to play a backyard style of game at times. While that can be fun and effective, he needs to become a more structured player if he is going to be a first-round prospect next year. Love has struggled with post-snap awareness at times, misdiagnosing the coverage and simply not seeing a safety or linebacker in the middle of the field.
He can get away with this playing in the Mountain West, but NFL defenses and defensive coordinators are going to eat him alive if this continues.
Simply put, Jordan Love is a talented quarterback prospect who has obvious upside at the next level. Right now, he is probably a fringe first-round prospect, but if he learns to read defenses better as the play unfolds in his final season in college, his NFL draft stock could quickly soar.
