2018 NFL Draft first round re-draft: What changes one year later?
7. Buffalo Bills: Quenton Nelson, G, Notre Dame
Orignal Pick: Josh Allen
I strongly considered going with the original 2018 NFL Draft pick here, as Josh Allen did show some promise for a relatively lack-luster Bills team last season. But the All-Pro guard is just too good to pass up.
Nelson was instrumental in the performance of the Colts offense in 2018. He sometimes single-handedly guided Marlon Mack or the other Colts running backs to the end zone. Even as a guard, Nelson was also able to help protect Andrew Luck and allow him to have the incredible comeback season that he did.
Most people would not have even considered taking a guard this early, but Nelson is truly a game changer, worthy of a top-five pick. The way this re-draft falls, Nelson actually ends up falling one spot, simply due to positional value.
Josh Allen may still have the backing of the front office as the future franchise quarterback, but he may not quite be worthy of this high of a pick in this draft. There are too many talented players that will knock him down in this re-draft. The Bills may be keeping their eyes peeled for him to fall down to them at 16.
8. Chicago Bears: Roquan Smith, LB, Georgia
Original Pick: Roquan Smith
Another tough decision here at eight overall. After skipping training camp during contract negotiations, Roquan Smith finally reported to the Bears to start the season. This caused him to not start right away, but Smith was still able to lead the team in tackles with 121 combined tackles.
Smith was also able to add five sacks and an interception his rookie season. Some may argue that there are better players available, maybe even at the same position, but Smith really came into his own as the season went on.
Smith is incredibly athletic and can cover the entire field, sideline to sideline. The Bears clearly liked him enough to take him in the top 10 and he did nothing but impress as a rookie. Smith and Danny Trevathan should be huge pieces in the middle of a great Bears defense going forward. Smith has the makings to become a top-tier linebacker in the NFL and remains the pick for the Bears.
