Remaining free agents Cleveland Browns should consider signing
OT Donald Penn
Greg Robinson played pretty well for the Browns down the stretch last season, earning himself a one-year $7 million contract over the offseason. Cleveland seems content with Robinson as their starting left tackle, but this is still the same guy who was a massive draft bust and has been basically terrible his entire career besides last season.
If nothing else, it would be nice to see the Browns at least find a quality backup plan at the left tackle position. Veteran left tackle Donald Penn would be a nice fit for this team.
Penn is a 36-year-old, 12-year NFL veteran who has basically been a full-time starter at the left tackle position throughout his NFL career. He has never been considered an elite offensive lineman, but he has always been rock solid at an extremely important position up front.
While he is certainly past his prime, Penn is still a productive player who has had a lot of success in recent history. In 2016 and 2017 with the Oakland Raiders, Penn was named to the Pro Bowl. That was not too long ago and it is fair to wonder if he still has that kind of upside.
I do not think that the Cleveland Browns should sign Penn as a replacement for Robinson, but they should look to bring him in as a backup. If Penn is willing to take a swing tackle role on a one-year deal, he would be a perfect fit in Cleveland, providing quality depth at the always important offensive tackle positions.
Right now, the Browns are putting everything into Robinson at left tackle. If he continues to play well, great. But if he busts again, they are in some serious trouble. Having Penn around would give them a quality backup plan in case Robinson does not work out.
