Ranking the top 2019 NFL offensive rookie of the year candidates
4. Dwayne Haskins, QB, Washington Redskins
In today’s NFL, the quarterback is king. With that in mind, if a quarterback can come in and have immediate success as a rookie, he is a strong bet to be in the rookie of the year running. Next, we are going to take a look at Washington Redskins quarterback Dwayne Haskins.
Haskins fell to the Redskins at number 15, where they gladly scooped up the guy who many considered to be the top signal-caller in the 2019 NFL Draft. Despite only starting one season in college, Haskins was one of the best quarterbacks in the NCAA last season, completing 70% of his passes for 4,831 yards, 50 touchdowns and only eight interceptions.
Simply put, Haskins was absolutely dominant at Ohio State and showed plenty of franchise quarterback potential for the next level.
The only real question here is whether Haskins will see enough playing time as a rookie. Alex Smith will not see the field this season, but Washington still has Colt McCoy around and traded for Case Keenum this offseason. Haskins is obviously the future, but is he the present? Right now, it’s hard to say. Nobody would be surprised to see the Redskins at least start the season with one of their veterans under center.
That being said, Haskins is too talented to be on the bench for long. If nothing else, it would be beneficial for him to go out and get some real NFL experience.
Whether he begins the season as the starting quarterback or not, Haskins is a logical choice for NFL offensive rookie of the year. He is a talented player with a solid supporting cast. If given the opportunity, a strong rookie year could certainly take place.
