Jacksonville Jaguars 2017 re-draft: Fixing the Fournette mistake
Round 5
Who it was: Blair Brown (148)
Who it should have been: Jayon Brown (155)
The Jacksonville Jaguars drafted the wrong linebacker with the last name Brown in the 2017 NFL draft as they decided to take Blair Brown out of Ohio in the fifth round. Brown was able to notch all of 12 tackles in two seasons with the Jaguars and was released back in May of this year.
Jayon Brown, however, went seven picks later to the Tennessee Titans and has become one of the better young linebackers in the league. In two seasons, Brown has 148 total tackles, 7.5 sacks and took an interception back for a touchdown last year.
His impact is undeniable and if the jaguars could do it all again, no doubt this would be the pick.
Round 7
Who it was: Jalen Myrick (222)
Who it should have been: Isaac Rochell (225)
Jalen Myrick wowed people at the 2017 NFL scouting combine after running a 4.28 40 yard dash, which was second to John Ross’ record-breaking 4.22. That speedy time was nearly as long as his time in Jacksonville, as Myrick lasted just one year in Duval and recorded a single tackle and had one kick return for 18 yards before being waived before the 2018 season.
The pick should have been Los Angeles Chargers defensive lineman, Isaac Rochell.
Rochell has already proven to be a solid rotational piece to a defensive line that covets versatility in different sets, not unlike the Jaguars. Last season, he tallied five sacks and nabbed himself an interception. Rochell is who the Jags hoped Dawuane Smoot would be.
Who it was: Marquez Williams (240)
Who it should have been: Chris Carson (249)
The Jacksonville Jaguars rounded out their 2017 draft class with fullback Marquez Williams out of Miami. Williams would never play a game with the Jags after starting his career on the PUP list and eventually getting waived with an injury settlement.
While the circumstance for the young man was unfortunate, the Jaguars had an opportunity to double up on the running back position by selecting the biggest steal of the 2017 NFL draft, Chris Carson.
Carson nearly went undrafted, as he wasn’t taken until the 249th pick (there were 253) of the seventh-round. He has quickly proven his worth in a big way, however, as he broke out in his second season with 1,151 yards (fifth in the NFL) on the ground and 9 touchdowns.
This pick alone would probably forgive a lot of the qualms that Jaguar fans have with the 2017 crop but alas, the Jaguars have to live with their decisions and hope that things look up going into 2019.
