Tight Ends

The biggest impact on Foles’ situation might be the drastic difference at tight end. The 2017 Eagles had Zach Ertz, Brent Celek and Trey Burton on their Super Bowl squad.

Ertz was voted to his first Pro Bowl that season and proved to be a go-to target for both Wentz and Foles. Celek was a veteran who provided valuable leadership for the younger guys on the team. Burton is known for his role in the “Philly Special” play in which he threw a touchdown to Foles in the Super Bowl, and then received a large contract from the Chicago Bears the following offseason.

The Jacksonville Jaguars simply do not have any sort of similar presence at tight end on their current roster. Austin Seferian-Jenkins is no longer in Jacksonville, and the Jags have scarce options to replace him.

They signed former Cowboys tight end Geoff Swaim this offseason and drafted Josh Oliver out of San Jose State in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, but they are no Zach Ertz. Oliver has impressed in OTA’s according to USA Today, but he will have some huge shoes to fill for Foles. Jacksonville has to hope that one of these guys are able to solidify themselves as a solid, reliable go-to option for Foles this season in a system that heavily utilizes the tight end.
