Coaching Staff

The obvious parallel on the coaching staffs in Foles’ two situations is John DeFilippo. DeFilippo was the quarterbacks coach for the Eagles in 2017 during their Super Bowl campaign. The successful season for Foles and the Eagles led to two of the team’s top offensive coaches (DeFilippo and Offensive Coordinator Frank Reich) leaving the team for other opportunities.

DeFilippo was named the Offensive Coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings in 2018, but things did not work out and he was fired before season’s end. Reich is now leading the Indianapolis Colts as their head coach.

The Eagles’ head coach during their Super Bowl run was their current coach and former NFL quarterback Doug Pederson. Under Pederson in 2017, the Eagles were a pass-first offense, ranking 1st in the league in passing touchdowns and 24th in the league in rushing touchdowns.

In the same year, under current head coach Doug Marrone, the Jaguars led the NFL in rushing attempts and yards, while also ranking second in rushing touchdowns. The Jags offense as a whole struggled mightily last season, but if running back Leonard Fournette comes back healthy and the running game gets back to 2017 form, that would take a lot of pressure off of Foles.
