Washington Redskins: 3 major concerns heading to training camp
By Craig Stofko
1. Trent Williams
The Trent Williams story was bogus from the beginning. None of it made sense and none of the fabricated details of the debacle were ever attributed to Trent himself. Trent had no reason whatsoever to be upset about anything. I’m sure he’d like the remaining money on his contract to be guaranteed, and that might even happen, but there was never even a remote chance that Trent was going to abandon his teammates, his coaches, and his fans.
Dismissing the fictional fantasy regarding Trent not playing for Washington, the team does have a legitimate issue at the position. They don’t appear to have anyone to serve as Trent’s backup.
This potential problem could be resolved in training camp if either Jeron Christian or Tyler Catalina steps up and proves capable of handling the LT duties. Both of these are very real possibilities. Christian and Catalina have had excellent offseasons and are bigger, stronger, and faster than they’ve ever been. They are also being coached up by one of the most respected O-line coaches in the league in Bill Callahan.
If Williams were to miss a game or two it would not be too surprising if one of these guys answered the call and got the job done. On the other hand, if they aren’t up to the challenge the Redskin’s offense, and particularly the quarterbacks, could be in trouble.
The team spent two draft picks and signed two free agents to bolster the middle of the offensive line but little was done to address a backup LT. Hopefully, that points to the coaches being optimistic that Trent’s backup was already on the team.
