Houston Texans: Looking ahead to potential needs for 2020 NFL Draft
1. Offensive Line
The Houston Texans had arguably the worst offensive line situation in the NFL last season. They struggled to consistently open up holes in the run game and were not able to protect Watson at a high level. Their league-leading 62 sacks allowed speaks for itself.
The Texans tried to address their offensive line issues this offseason, signing Matt Kalil in free agency and taking Tytus Howard in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft and Max Scharping in the third. However, I am not a huge fan of any of these particular moves.
Kalil is nothing more than short-term depth at offensive tackle, Howard has some upside, but was a massive reach in the first round and Scharping is a small-school prospect who is not ready to compete at a high level.
When it comes down to it, the Texans easily may have done nothing to fix their offensive line issues this offseason. I fully expect them to enter next offseason with many of the same concerns up front.
Aside from center Nick Martin (whose contract expires after the 2019 season), the Texans do not have much to get excited about on the offensive line. This will continue to be an obvious need for the Houston Texans going forward and a position that they will likely be looking to fill in the 2020 NFL Draft.
