Sophomore slump candidates for the 2019 NFL season
Sony Michel, RB, New England Patriots
Tom Brady and Bill Belichick won their sixth Super Bowl ring together this past season, but that may not have happened if it weren’t for the effort provided by their 2018 first round pick, Sony Michel.
Michel put together an outstanding rookie season for the New England Patriots after toting the rock over 200 times and rushing for over 900 yards in only 13 games. His biggest impact, however, just may have been his performance in the postseason, as he totaled 336 yards on the ground and scored 6 touchdowns while being trusted to carry the ball over 23 times per game.
Nobody can question the importance of Michel in 2018, but I am not quite ready to announce him as the next big thing in the NFL.
The Patriots have created their dynasty seemingly without the need for a bell cow running back and I don’t expect their style of play to change now. New England has always been a stable system type of offense and after drafting Alabama running back Damien Harris in the third round of this past draft, the Patriots backfield suddenly feels crowded.
Add in the fact that Michel is coming off of offseason knee surgery and you have the makings for another classic running back sophomore slump in 2019.
