The San Francisco 49ers are an obvious fit for free agent safety Tre Boston.

If quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo can stay healthy, the San Francisco 49ers could be legitimate contenders in the NFC West this season. The 49ers have obvious talent on both sides of the ball and head coach Kyle Shanahan knows how to get the most out of his players.

The NFC West is loaded, with both the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks set up to be post-season contenders, but do not sleep on the 49ers.

If San Francisco is to reach their true potential, they have some work to do in the secondary. In particular, they could use a safety who can cover on the back-end. Tre Boston is a fantastic athlete at the safety position who shows great range and overall coverage ability. He is an elite coverage safety who is still available on the open market.

With their need on the back-end, Boston is a perfect fit for the San Francisco 49ers. In fact, Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski predicts that Boston will sign with the 49ers.

"“The San Francisco 49ers are an ideal fit for three reasons,” Sobleski wrote. “First, they need help at free safety since Jimmie Ward is injured again. Second, Boston is the type of sideline-to-sideline backline defender required in coordinator Robert Saleh’s Seattle Seahawks-inspired scheme. Finally, the 49ers’ $31.6 million in available salary-cap space gives the franchise more than enough wiggle room to meet Boston’s demands.”"

Boston struggled to find an ideal free agent fit last offseason as well, eventually settling for a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Arizona Cardinals. According to Adam Fisher of the Fort Myers News-Press, Boston has received numerous contract offers this offseason, but none of them have been satisfactory to him.

Boston clearly believes that he is being undervalued on the open market and I completely agree. He is a legitimate impact player at the safety position, particularly dominating in coverage. In today’s NFL, where the passing game is king, teams should be lining up to sign Boston. Instead, he continues to get under-valued.

The San Francisco 49ers should be the team to step up and pay Boston what he is worth. He could drastically improve their ability to compete in 2018 as the last line of defense at the free safety position.
