2017 NFL Draft Redo: Re-Drafting the entire first round
10. Kansas City Chiefs: Desmond King, DB, Iowa
Original Pick: Patrick Mahomes
It’s hard to even imagine the Kansas City Chiefs without Pat Mahomes. However, with Mahomes going to the Browns with the first pick, that is the reality in this re-draft. With both of the other top quarterbacks off of the board, it is unlikely that the Chiefs would have made their massive trade up from 27 to 10. However, we are not messing with trades here, just the picks.
Getting any player other than Mahomes here is obviously going to be a disappointment, but defensive back Desmond King is not a terrible consolation prize.
King was a dominant cornerback in college but slipped in the draft due to concerns about his size and a slow 40-time. The Los Angeles Chargers were able to snag King in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft and he ended up being a massive steal.
King has been a full-time starter for the Chargers at the nickel back position. He has quickly become one of the premier slot cornerbacks in the NFL and is a great punt returner as well. King does not have elite speed or athleticism, but he is an incredibly quick player who also shows tremendous instincts in coverage. On top of that, he is a hard-nosed player who is not afraid to come up and offer support against the run.
The Chiefs have had a lot of issues in the secondary. Adding a first-team All-Pro to their defensive back mix help them tremendously on that side of the ball.
