Felton Davis could be a hidden gem for the Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs may have found a hidden gem in this undrafted rookie wide receiver.
I would not call the wide receiver position a major area of concern for the Kansas City Chiefs. That being said, depending on what happens Tyreek Hill, there could be some snaps up for grabs at the position. Sammy Watkins, Demarcus Robinson and Mecole Hardman are all but locked in at the position, but there is a lot of unknown behind them on the depth chart.
Gehrig Dieter, Byron Pringle and Marcus Kemp are the other receivers who have the best chance of finding their way onto the active roster. These guys will be battling for snaps in training camp. Another wide receiver who I will certainly be keeping an eye on is undrafted rookie Felton Davis III.
Davis burst onto the scene in 2017 during his junior season at Michigan State when he caught 55 passes for 776 yards and nine touchdowns. He was on his way to another successful year as a senior but suffered an Achilles injury that cost him half of his season. In only six games, Davis had 31 receptions for 474 yards and four touchdowns.
The Achilles injury was obviously unfortunate and probably cost Davis a chance of getting drafted. That being said, he has a chance to make an impact with the Chiefs.
Davis is a big and long receiver (6-foot-3. 211 pounds, 32 3/4″ arms) who excels in contested catch situations. He has an impressive catch radius, uses his body well to shield defenders and consistently catches the ball away from his body.
The former Spartan did struggle against press coverage in college, but that can be helped by lining up in the slot. He is an ideal big slot receiver at the next level and has some nice upside if he is used properly. Andy Reid and company will undoubtedly know how to use this guy the right way.
Davis’ Achilles injury obviously complicates this a bit. He was not a full participant in OTAs but he was able to get on the field and do some work. If his recovery continues to progress well, Davis has the skills to be a legitimate threat for the 53-man roster.
The Kansas City Chiefs really do not have another player like Davis on the roster and it is easy to see how he could grow into a bit of a security blanket for Patrick Mahomes out of the slot. Whether he is healthy enough to become that player this season is the major question. Regardless, there is a lot to like here and I would not be surprised to see Davis become a legitimate playmaker for Kansas City at some point.
